При этом в движении сюжета и чередовании перипетий постоянно присутствует нечто в высшей степени невероятное: материализуется женский портрет, внезапно появляется дикий и неопознанный агрессор, убийца вынужден следить за ходом расследования собственного преступления, словно из-под земли возникает всезнающий шантажист с сатанинской ухмылкой, который затем чудесным образом исчезает с лица земли так же неожиданно, как и появился. У существования этого бурного потока невероятных совпадений, следующих одно за другим, есть лишь одно оправдание: они рождены специально, чтобы преследовать героя. И его финальное пробуждение только еще больше затуманивает разум зрителя. Так Ланг использует онейрическую конструкцию и атмосферу, чтобы подсказать и внушить зрителю мысль о том, что реальность по сути своей – кошмар. Они с Айрис не расстаются и в финале вновь встречают мисс Фрой, живую и невредимую, в здании Министерства иностранных дел в Лондоне.► Этот развлекательный фильм, сделанный с высочайшим мастерством, полный виртуозных визуальных находок, принес Хичкоку мировую славу. Любопытно, что это единственный случай в карьере режиссера, когда он подхватил проект, изначально предназначенный для другого. Сценарий Лондера и Гиллиатта должен был снимать прекрасный режиссер Рой Уильям Нилл (в то время работавший в Англии). Но 2-й режиссер получил травму на натурных съемках в Югославии и проект был остановлен, чтобы потом возродиться в совсем иных условиях. От натурных съемок отказались вовсе. Хичкок внес ряд изменений в сценарий и полностью переделал финал. При всей своей ирреалистичности (фильм напоминает ироничный кошмар), Дама исчезает - один из редких фильмов Хичкока, действие которого помещено в точно обозначенный исторический и политический контекст (в данном случае - смутное и грозное время накануне войны). По ходу действия даже высмеиваются пацифистские настроения.Хичкок с радостью ухватился за этот сюжет и приспособил его под себя на 3 различных уровнях. Прежде всего, в этой истории, наполненной событиями, но в основном происходящей в замкнутом пространстве, он увидел повод к созданию целой галереи живописных маленьких персонажей и вариаций на тему отношений мужчины и женщины (как он это сделает гораздо позже в Окне во двор, Rear Window). Кроме этого, он высмеивает ряд чисто английских привычек и моделей поведения, связанных с характером англичан и с их оторванностью от континента. В этом фильме видна рука моралиста, обаятельного и желчного, для которого привлекательность истории неотделима от ее моральной чистоты. Так, препятствия, с которыми сталкивается героиня, пытаясь достучаться до своих попутчиков и добиться от них помощи, - препятствия, так удачно питающие саспенс фильма, - дают автору прекрасную возможность для бичевания безразличия, эгоизма, ограниченного и опасного упрямства некоторых персонажей, в которых каждый зритель в тот или иной момент действия может узнать себя. Комментаторы Хичкока часто называют его превосходным рассказчиком, юмористом, мастером саспенса, метафизиком.
